We regret troubling you again about this matter, but copies
of correspondence reached us yesterday from Mr. Sanders of Massza. Ban-
ders, Rehders à Co. dated New York 20th March, including that of a letter
addressed to the Colonial offics, 13th ulto., the contents of which being
no misleading, we feel called upon to explain.
Reverting to your favor of the 12th February and to our conver-
sations previously, we cannot allow the name of our firm in Hongkong to
be associated with 8. R. & Co., for reasons known to you; and although
Mr. Holyoak, who is in charge of our branch house there, cabled to New
York agreeing to the Joint agency subject to our approval, we cannot change
this decision. When we gave notice to 8. R. & Co. terminating our agree-
ment on 30th June next, it was clearly laid down that no joint agency
Would be entertained by us, and we have repeatedly told them so since,
The continuance of this agency is only possible for us as a direct one
between The Texas Co. and ourselves, fully as we appreciate and anxious as
we are to comply with your wishes, and those of Sir Henry May, to retain
the business in British hands.
